Thief identified

I faced some difficulty while attempting a translation of the story below, especially the part about the sleeve. Does it refer to the shirt sleeve or the rope sleeve?

Please feel free to comment or suggest a better translation.

Pencuri kantoi

Translation:

I will not punish anyone specific among you

A number of wise old man narrated to me this story:

A thief stole five hundred dinars from a man. Soon, a number of accused suspects were captured and brought to the region’s ruler to be put on trial.

The ruler made a speech to the suspects: “I will not accuse anyone specific among you. Instead, I have left a lengthy rope inside a room which is dark and without a window for light to enter. Each one of you should get into the room, hold the rope, and run your hands over the surface of the rope from one end towards the other end and then exit the room. (1) The rope will fold itself to form a cuff around the hands of the thief.”

Actually, the rope’s surface was covered with black powder before the session in the dark room began.

When the accused suspects entered the windowless room, each one of them, except the real thief, run their hands over the surface of the rope under total darkness, not being aware that the rope has previously been dusted with black power. Once the accused suspects came out from the dark room, the ruler recognized that one of the suspects has his hands clean while the rest has their’s blackened. Therefore, he immediately identified him as the thief and proved his case without doubt.

Notes:

  1. I initially include the following sentence as part of the translation : [“After that, each one of you should insert your hands into the rope’s sleeve and pull it out.”] However, I decided to remove it later. The portion, despite having its meaning present in the source text, is not necessary in order to comprehend the whole story.

Translation:

They place a blindfold on him until he fell asleep

A group of people from Kufa went out traveling. Each member of the group agreed to share the cost of purchasing an oil lamp for use during the travel, except for one person. Therefore, whenever they set alight the lamp, the person who refused to chip in was blindfolded until he fell asleep. Also, whenever they douse the lamp, the blindfold would be removed from covering his eyes.

Notes:

  1. I believe the story above is famous and must exist in different versions. One version mentioned sharing the cost of purchasing the oil for the lamp, instead of the lamp itself. I remember reading  a similar one  in Kitaab al-Bukhalaa’, now translated as The Book of Misers by Professor R.B. Serjeant. A collection of anecdotes containing the version above mentioned its source as Hadaa’iq al-Azaahir.

Dialogue between a muslim scholar and the daughter of Hulagu, leader of the Tatars

Translation:
A daughter of Hulagu, who was the leader of the Tatars, used to wander around Baghdad . While there, she noticed  that a gathering of people focused  their attention on a man among the people of the city. She asked around about the man and later discovered that the man is a muslim religious scholar. After that, she issued an order to her subordinates that the man be brought to meet her.
Once the muslim scholar appeared  in front of Hulagu’s daughter, she asked him: “You people believe in God. Is that correct?”
The muslim scholar said: “Indeed, that is correct.”
She continued asking: “Didn’t you claim that God provides support to those He wishes?”
He answered: “Indeed, we made that claim.”
She asked further: “Had it not been the case that God provides His assistance to us in our struggle against you people?”
He answered: “Indeed, that is the case.”
She went even further: “Doesn’t that clearly shows that we, the Tatars, are more beloved to God than you… Muslims? “
The muslim scholar replied: “No!”
She asked: “How could that be the case?”
Now,  the muslim scholar responded with his line of questioning: “Do you know about shepherds whose job is to herd, tend and guard sheep?”
She answered:”Yes, I know about shepherds.”
The muslim scholar continued: “Can you notice that there are a number of dogs being together with the flock?”
She said: “Yes, there are dogs present together with the flock of sheep.”
He asked: “What would the shepherd do if some of his sheep went astray and refuse to obey his order?”
She said: “The shepherd would release his dogs to chase the sheep and bring those sheep back to him.”
He continued: “For how long does the pursuit would be?”
Hulagu’s daughter answered: ” As long as the sheep remain astray and refuse to return to his owner.”
Finally, the muslim scholar said: “Likewise, you… the Tatars, are the dogs of God in His land! For as long as we… Muslims, disobey God, and  remain astray from His path, you… the Tatars, would remain chasing us from behind until we return back to Him, The Owner of Glory and The Most High.”
